TfL Releases Cycle Journey Planner
Since 28 May 2010, public transport journeys at Transport for London (www.journeyplanner.org) are not the only way to get around town. Now cycle routes can also be planned using a map-based cycle journey planner that can be found at the following link: cyclejourneyplanner.tfl.gov.uk. It provides options for beginners, experienced cyclists and joy-riders. In addition to cycle-only routes, journeys with a public transport component can also be planned. In fact, Bike&Ride stations were added at public transport stops all around the city. As a further option, the cycle journey planner can plan routes that include cycle transport on public transport vehicles. And because special cycle rules apply in London (www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/11701.aspx) they were also integrated into the cycle journey planner.
The cycle route planner is based on special routing attributes on the geographical street network. The planner favors routes that are recommended or have clear signposting, that have cycle lanes or that mainly use greenways. Additionally, each cycle route can be downloaded to a GPS device to trace its path in the streets of London while en route.
London is about to open the first two of many Cycle Superhighways. Both these and the new cycle hire docking stations, which can be used as origins and destinations, are available in the new cycle journey planner.
